Internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress, Kasia Smutniak is regarded as one of the most compelling and distinctive faces of contemporary European cinema.
An anti-diva par excellence, she moves effortlessly between the glamour of the international red carpet and the silence of Mustang, Nepal — a duality that has come to define both her artistic path and public image. Throughout her career, Kasia has built a unique identity marked by elegance, intelligence, independence and determination, moving seamlessly between cinema, television, fashion and directing.
Born in Warsaw in 1979, the daughter of a Polish Air Force general, she grew up immersed in the world of aviation. Inheriting her father’s passion for flying, she obtained her pilot’s licence at just sixteen years old. At the same age, she was discovered as a model, beginning an international career that eventually brought her to Italy, where she would establish herself as one of the country’s leading actresses.
In the early 2000s, she began her acting career, going on to appear in more than forty film and television productions. Her breakthrough came in 2008 with Peter Del Monte’s Nelle tue Mani (In Your Hands), for which she received the Italian Golden Globe for Best Breakthrough Actress of the Year, as well as her first Nastro d’Argento.
Over the years, she has collaborated with some of the most important Italian and international directors, starring in films such as Caos Calmo by Antonello Grimaldi alongside Nanni Moretti (2008), La Passione by Carlo Mazzacurati (2009), From Paris with Love by Pierre Morel (2010), Meraviglioso Boccaccio by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (2015), Dolce Fine Giornata by Jacek Borcuch (2019), and Il Colibrì by Francesca Archibugi (2022).
She was also part of the ensemble cast of Paolo Genovese’s internationally celebrated Perfect Strangers (Perfetti Sconosciuti), the multi-award-winning phenomenon that holds the record for the highest number of remakes in cinema history.
Her international profile expanded further through major English-language productions, including From Paris with Love, and most recently with her portrayal of Mary in Mel Gibson’s latest feature film, marking another important step in her international career.
Her television work further confirmed her international stature. She starred opposite Patrick Dempsey and Alessandro Borghi in the Sky original series Devils, directed by Nick Hurran, and took on the leading role of Livia Drusilla in the historical drama Domina, directed by Claire McCarthy.
In 2014, Kasia won the Nastro d’Argento for Best Leading Actress for her acclaimed performance in Ferzan Özpetek’s Allacciate le Cinture (Fasten Your Seatbelts). In 2018, she received another Nastro d’Argento, this time for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in Paolo Sorrentino’s Loro 1 and Loro 2.
In parallel with her artistic work, she has remained deeply involved in humanitarian and cultural preservation projects. In 2011, she created the Solar Ghami School in Mustang, Nepal — an innovative educational project developed in full respect of traditional Mustangi architecture and dedicated to preserving the region’s thousand-year-old Tibetan culture.
In 2023, she made her directorial debut with the documentary Mur, an intimate and politically resonant work that won the Nastro d’Argento for Best Documentary of the Year. The film premiered in the official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival and was later presented in Italy at the Festa del Cinema di Roma. Mur was subsequently shortlisted among the five finalists for Best Documentary at the 2024 David di Donatello Awards.
